Etymology: < classical Latin nūbēcula a small cloud, a cloud-like cluster of stars, a cloudy area in urine, a film in the eye < nūbēs cloud (see nubilous adj.) + -cula -cula suffix. Compare French nubécule whitish matter in urine, an eye disease making vision cloudy (1701; 1556 in Middle French in sense ‘stain on a precious stone’), hazy area in the sky near the south pole (1765). N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (niubī·kiulă) /njuːˈbiːkjuːlə/.
