Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French nonnat.
Etymology: < French nonnat (1681) < French regional (Nice) nounat < classical Latin nōn nātus not born < nōn not (see non- prefix) + nātus born, past participle of nāscī to be born (see nascent adj.). Compare Italian regional (Sicily) nonnatu, nunnatu small fishes. N.E.D. (1907) gives the pronunciation as (nǫ·næt) /ˈnɒnæt/.
Obsolete.
A young sand smelt (genus Atherina) of Mediterranean waters.
