Etymology: < Italian nonupla (1561) < classical Latin nōnus ninth (see nona- comb. form) + -pla (in e.g. tripla tripla n.). Compare French nonuple (1721 in this sense; attested earlier in Middle French as adjective; compare nonuple adj.). Compare sextupla adj. and n., and earlier tripla n.
Music. Obsolete.
A tempo or time signature having nine crotchets or quavers in a bar. Cf. nonuplet n.
