Forms: 1700s– nordcaper, 1800s– nordkaper. N.E.D. (1907) also records a form nordkapper.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from German. Or (ii) a borrowing from Dutch. Or (iii) a borrowing from Norwegian. Etymons: German Nordkaper; Dutch noordkaper; Norwegian nordkaper.
Etymology: Either < German Nordkaper (1754 in the work translated in quot. 1762; 1719 as †Nord-Caper : compare north-caper n.), or < Dutch noordkaper (1727), or < Norwegian nordkaper, all < the name of the North Cape (German Nordkap , Dutch Noordkaap , Norwegian Nordkapp ), the name of a promontory on the north coast of Magerøya, an island off the north coast of Norway + -er -er suffix1. Compare earlier north-caper n. Compare French nordcaper (1868 in Littré).
A North Atlantic right whale (genus Balaena); spec. the black right whale, B. glacialis (formerly known as B. nordcaper).
