Origin: Probably either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or perhaps (ii) a borrowing from Norwegian. Etymons: Norse adj.; Norwegian norsk.
Etymology: Probably either an alteration of Norse adj. after Scottish adj. (compare Scots adj. and n.), or directly < Norwegian norsk Norse adj., with suffix substitution (see -ish suffix1; compare Middle Low German noresch , norresch , norrisch ). Perhaps compare post-classical Latin Norriscus (12th cent. in British sources; 1086 as Norrescus ). Compare earlier Norrenish adj. and n.
