Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin obiicient-, obiiciens.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin obiicient-, obiiciens opponent (5th cent.), use as noun of masculine singular of classical Latin obiiciēns , present participle of obiicere object v. Compare earlier objector n. N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ̆bdʒi·ʃiĕnt) /əbˈdʒɪʃ(ɪ)ənt/.
Chiefly Roman Catholic Church. Now rare.
A person who objects or makes an objection; an opponent of a motion or proposition.
