Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin oblativus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin oblativus relating to an obligatory offering (late 4th cent.), offered by chance (early 5th cent.) < classical Latin oblāt- , past participial stem of offerre offer v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare slightly later oblatory adj.Post-classical Latin oblativus is not found in Virgil (see quots. a1722 at sense 2 and 1880 at sense 2), but in his 5th-cent. commentator, Servius.
