Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin oenanthē , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin oenanthē inflorescence of the wild vine, a plant, perhaps dropwort ( < ancient Greek οἰνάνθη inflorescence of the wild vine or grape vine, vine, a plant, perhaps dropwort < οἴνη vine (related to οἶνος wine: see oeno- comb. form) + ἄνθη blossom, bloom < ἀνθεῖν to blossom: see anthesis n.) + -ic suffix, after German Oenanthsäure oenanthic acid, Oenanthäther oenanthic ether (both J. Liebig and J. Pelouze 1836, in Ann. der Pharmacie 19 243). Compare French acide œnanthique (1836).Oenanthe was adopted by Linnaeus as a name for a genus of umbelliferous plants comprising the water dropworts: compare oenanthin n.
Chemistry.
1. oenanthic acid n. (a) an acid obtained from oenanthic ether and later shown to be a mixture consisting chiefly of straight-chain fatty acids including caprylic, pelargonic, and capric acids (obsolete); (b) the straight-chain, saturated fatty acid n-heptanoic acid, CH3(CH2)5COOH; also called oenanthylic acid.
