Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin obligurire.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin obligurire to lick up, squander (4th cent. in an isolated attestation: see note) < classical Latin ob- ob- prefix + ligūrīre (also ligurrīre ) to be dainty, lick, lick up (see ligurion n.). Compare obligurate v.The Latin word may be attested already in classical Latin, in a fragment of Ennius cited by the post-classical Latin author Donatus in his commentary on Terence (4th cent.), but both here and in the later example it may represent a misreading for abligūrīre to eat delicately (see abligurition n.).
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
