Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French obole.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman obole halfpenny and Middle French, French obole small French coin (13th cent. in Old French), type of small weight (1350; 1611 in Cotgrave in spec. sense ‘apothecaries' weight’), ancient Greek coin (1539) < classical Latin obolus obolus n. Compare obolus n. and earlier obol n.
Now historical.
1. A small silver coin in medieval Europe; spec. (a) an English halfpenny; (b) a small French coin (originally of silver, later of billon) in use from the 10th to 15th centuries and having the value of half a denier (also called a maille). Also (more generally): any coin of low value. Cf. mail n.4
