Etymology: < scientific Latin Nycteridae, family name (G. E. Dobson 1875, in Ann. & Mag. Nat. Hist. 16 348) < Nycteris (see nycterine n. and adj.) + -idae (see -id suffix³). Compare scientific Latin †Nycterides, name for Microchiroptera in the classification of Haeckel (1866).
