Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek νυχθήμερον.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek νυχθήμερον period of a day and a night, use as noun of neuter singular of νυχθήμερος lasting for a day and a night < ancient Greek νυκτ- , νύξ night (see nycti- comb. form) + ἡμέρα day (see hemera n.2). Compare earlier nuchthemerinal adj.In Greek the -κτ- of νυκτ- are assimilated to -χθ- before the initial aspiration of ἡμέρα, but in English the former consonant sometimes loses its aspiration, by analogy with other formations in nyct-. N.E.D. (1907) enters this under nychthemeron and gives the pronunciation as (nikþī·mĕrǫn) /nɪkˈθiːmərɒn/.
