Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: ocelot n., -i- connective, cat n.1
Etymology: < oc- (in ocelot n.) + -i- connective + cat n.1, punningly after ocelot n., on account of a supposed resemblance to the wild ocelot.
A breed of domestic cat which has a spotted coat somewhat resembling that of some wild cat species; a cat of this breed.

1970 K. Unkelbach Catnip iv. 38 Ocicat. New and not widely known as yet, this big, rangy hybrid (Siamese and Abyssinian) has a satiny, cream coat that carries chestnut spots.
1990 Cat Fancy Feb. 70/1 Most colors, including sparkling silvers and whites; Himalayans, Siamese and spotted Ocicats.
2010 Guardian 20 Mar. (Guide to Pets) 26/3 American shorthair cats were later added to the mix to get the ocicat we know today, the first being brought to Britain in 1988.
