Etymology: < ob- prefix + compressed adj., probably after French obcomprimé (1818 in quot. below) or post-classical Latin obcompressus.Although the Latin word is attributed to Cassini in quot. 1857, he seems to have used the French word, compare:1818 H. Cassini in Dict. des Sci. Nat. X. 419 L'ovaire est ordinairement tétragone et obcomprimé, c'est-a-dire, comprimé antérieurement, et postérieurement, de sort que son plus grand diamètre est de droite à gauche.
