Etymology: < classical Latin obtruncāt-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix3) of obtruncāre to cut or lop off the head or top of < ob- ob- prefix + truncāre truncate v. Compare Middle French obtrunquer to kill, slaughter (1546). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫ̆btrɒ·ŋkeit) /əbˈtrʌŋkeɪt/.
