Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ōbic-, ōbex.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōbic-, ōbex barrier, bolt < obicere object v. Compare Middle French obice obstacle (late 15th cent.). In sense 2 after scientific Latin obex calami scriptorii obex of the calamus scriptorius (1859 or earlier; compare quot. 1882 at sense 2).
1. An impediment or obstacle; a mental barrier. Now rare.
