Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: acaleph n., -oid suffix.
Etymology: < acaleph n. + -oid suffix, after German akalephenartig (1842 in the passage translated in quot. 1845). Compare scientific Latin acalephoides (1851 or earlier as a specific epithet in botany).
Zoology. Now rare.
Resembling animals of the former class Acalepha.

1845 G. Busk tr. J. J. S. Steenstrup On Alternation of Generations i. 19 The free, acalephoid [Ger. acalephenartigen] animalculæ, were metamorphosed into the commonest of our medusæ (Medusa aurita).
1854 W. B. Carpenter Princ. Compar. Physiol. (ed. 4) xi. 561 In this condition, the ‘pluteus’ may be said to present the Acalephoid type, corresponding with the Medusæ in its proboscidiform mouth.
1862 Westm. Rev. Jan. 262 Professor Agassiz thinks himself able to prove that the Echinoderms are essentially Acalephoid animals.
1940 W. Robbins in Terror Tales May 89/2 Instinct within him also is that motivation which causes..certain acalephoids and jelly fish to turn to dangling bits of moss.
