Origin: A borrowing from Tagalog. Etymon: Tagalog barangay.
Etymology: < Tagalog barangay neighbourhood, barrio, community, altered < balangay a type of Malay sailing vessel.The first Malay settlements in the Philippines were established by family or clan units migrating in balangays from Borneo.
In the Philippines: a village, suburb, or other demarcated neighbourhood; a small territorial and administrative district forming the most local level of government.
