Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin olfacient-, olfaciēns, olfacere.
Etymology: < classical Latin olfacient-, olfaciēns, present participle of olfacere (also olefacere ) to detect the odour of, smell < olēre to give off a smell (see olent adj.) + facere to make (see fact n., int., and adv.); compare -facient comb. form.Classical Latin olfaciēns is used as a noun in post-classical Latin, but in the sense ‘a person who detects the odour of’ (5th cent. in Augustine). N.E.D. (1902) gives the pronunciation as (ǫlfēi·ʃiĕnt) /ɒlˈfeɪʃ(ɪ)ənt/.
Obsolete. rare.
