Etymology: < old adj. + the name of Adam (see Adam n.1), after post-classical Latin vetus Adam (see Adam n.1). Compare earlier new Adam n. at new adj. and n. Compounds 2a.
1. Chiefly with the. The biblical Adam as a representative of the sinful and unregenerate character of human nature, which in traditional Western Christian theology is overcome by a person's acceptance of Christ (see new Adam n. at new adj. and n. Compounds 2a); (allusively) sinful character or nature, esp. as the cause of wild and reprehensible behaviour. Cf. Adam n.1 1, old man n. 2.
