Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin omnivorus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin omnivorus eating all kinds of food ( < omni- omni- comb. form + -vorus : see -vorous comb. form) + -ous suffix. Compare Italian onnivoro (1598 in Florio), French omnivore (dated 1749 in Robert Dict. Alphabétique et Analogique (1986)).
All-devouring.
1. literal (chiefly Zoology). Feeding on or characterized by a varied diet of both plant and animal origin; contrasted with carnivorous, herbivorous, etc. Also: eating food of all kinds (i.e. not vegetarian) (colloquial).
