Etymology: < scientific Latin Opiliones, order name (C. J. Sundevall Conspectus Arachnidum (1833); < Opilio , genus name (J. F. W. Herbst Natursystem der ungeflügelten Insekten (1798) II. 2) < opilio , specific name (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (ed. 10, 1758) I. 618) < classical Latin ōpiliō (plural ōpiliōnēs ) herdsman, in post-classical Latin also used to denote these animals (a1604 in T. Moffet Insectorum Theatrum (1634) 70) < ovis sheep (see ovi- comb. form2) + a second element of uncertain origin) + -id suffix3. Compare scientific Latin Opilionides, former family name (1839), and Opilionidae, current family name. Compare French opilions, plural (1874).
