Etymology: Partly < barb v. + -ing suffix1, and partly < barb n.1 + -ing suffix1. In later use in sense 1 probably chiefly as a result of association with barber n.
1. Originally: the action or practice of clipping, sheep-shearing, or cutting. In later use: the action or occupation of shaving, cutting, and styling hair or facial hair. Now frequently as a modifier, as in barbing salon n. Now chiefly Nigerian English.
