Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Onomasiologie.
Etymology: < German Onomasiologie (A. Zauner Die romanischen Namen der Körperteile (1902) 4) < ancient Greek ὀνομασία name ( < ὀνομάζειν to name (see onomastic n. and adj.) + -ία -ia suffix1) + German -ologie -ology comb. form, after Semasiologie semasiology n. Compare French onomasiologie (1904), Italian onomasiologia (1904).
Linguistics.
The study of language which deals with the identification of a preconceived meaning or concept by name or names.As opposed to semasiology, in which words are analysed for the meanings they represent. Cf. semasiology n.
