Etymology: < onomastic adj.: see -ic suffix 2. Compare ancient Greek ὀνομαστική , use as noun (short for ἡ τέχνη ἡ ὀνομαστική ) of feminine singular of ὀνομαστικός onomastic adj. Compare French onomastique study of proper names (1872: see onomastic n. and adj.), Italian onomastica (1911). Compare earlier onomatology n.
The study or science of the history and origin of (esp. personal) proper names. Also: naming habits or practices.
