Etymology: < French opisthoglyphes, (plural) suborder name (A. H. A. Duméril 1853, in Mém. de l'Acad. des Sci. de l'Inst. de France 23 412) < opistho- opistho- comb. form + Hellenistic Greek γλυϕή carving (see glyph n.). Compare scientific Latin Opisthoglypha (1858 or earlier).
