Etymology: < post-classical Latin onagra (perhaps 6th cent.; in botanical use from 1587) < Hellenistic Greek ὀνάγρα , feminine derivative of ὄναγρος onager n. Compare French onagra (1615), onagre (1778).

Botany. Now disused.

A former genus of plants that comprised the evening primroses, now placed in the genus Oenothera; a plant of this former genus. Cf. oenothera n.Valid publication of the genus name: P.
