Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Onchocerca , -iasis suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Onchocerca, the name of a genus of parasitic filarial worms (C. M. Diesing 1841, in Oesterreich. med. Wochenschr. 27 Feb. 200; < ancient Greek ὄγκος barb (cognate with classical Latin uncus uncus n.) + κέρκος tail: see cercus n.) + -iasis suffix.
Medicine and Veterinary Medicine.
Infestation with or disease caused by worms of the filarial genus Onchocerca; spec. a disease of humans caused by O. volvulus and transmitted by biting flies of the genus Simulium, which is common in tropical Africa and parts of tropical America and is marked by characteristic lesions of subcutaneous tissue and the eyes, often causing blindness (also called river blindness).
