Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin opercularis.
Etymology: < scientific Latin opercularis (1758 as a specific name) < classical Latin operculum cover, covering, lid (see operculum n.) + -āris -ar suffix1. Compare French operculaire, noun (1803 in botany, 1836 in zoology) and adjective (1815 in botany).

1. Zoology and Botany. Of, relating to, or of the nature of an operculum; characterized by the presence of an operculum. Also: †designating the smaller of the two valves of a bivalve mollusc when they are unequal in size (obsolete).
