Etymology: < scientific Latin operculatus (1758 as a specific name) < classical Latin operculātus , past participle of operculāre operculate v. Compare French operculé (1767 in zoology, 1812 in botany). With use as noun compare scientific Latin Operculata (see quot. 1854 at sense B. 1).
