Etymology: < French opéron (F. Jacob & J. Monod 1960, in Compt. rend. 250 1729) < opér- (in opérer to effect, work: see operate v.) + -on -on suffix1.
Genetics.
A unit of coordinated gene activity which regulates protein synthesis in prokaryotes, consisting of a linear sequence of structural genes with one or more regulatory regions. Cf. operator n. 9, promoter n. 4c.
