Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ὀρνιθοσκοπία.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ὀρνιθοσκοπία divination from birds < ancient Greek ὀρνιθοσκόπος observing (and divining by) birds, auguring ( < ὀρνιθο- ornitho- comb. form + -σκόπος : see -scope comb. form) + -ία -y suffix3; compare -scopy comb. form. Compare French ornithoscopie (1812). Compare earlier orneoscopics n., orniscopics n., ornithomancy n., and later orniscopy n.
Observation of birds for the purpose of divination; augury.
