Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French orpiment (c1165 in Old French; French orpiment ) < classical Latin auripigmentum auripigment n. Compare post-classical Latin orpimentum (late 13th cent. in British sources), Catalan orpiment (13th cent.; < French), Spanish †orpiment (13th cent.; < Catalan; now oropimente )), Italian orpimento (a1320). 1. More fully yellow orpiment. Arsenic trisulphide, As2S3, a bright yellow mineral of the monoclinic system which occurs naturally as prismatic crystals or massive deposits and was formerly used as a dye or artist's pigment. Also called yellow arsenic and (as a pigment) king's yellow.Orpiment is the original arsenic (ancient Greek ἀρσενικόν). Cf. arsenic n. 1a.
