Etymology: Originally < red flag n. + -ing suffix1. In later use also partly < red-flag v. + -ing suffix1.
The action of signalling with, flying, or marking something with a red flag (in various senses); spec. the action of identifying someone or something as a cause for concern or as warranting special attention (cf. red-flag v. 2).
