Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Orthoceras.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Orthoceras (J. P. Breynius Dissertatio Physica et Polythalamius, Nova Testacorum Classe (1732) vi. 28) < ancient Greek ὀρθο- ortho- comb. form + κέρας horn (see kerato- comb. form). Compare Hellenistic Greek ὀρθοκέρατος straight-horned, and orthoceratite n.
Palaeontology.
A fossil orthoconic shell of a nautiloid cephalopod mollusc of the Palaeozoic or early Mesozoic eras; spec. a member of the genus Orthoceras. Also: (as Orthoceras) the genus itself.
