Etymology: < French orthopédique (dated 1711 in Robert Dict. alphabétique et analogique (1986)) < orthopédie orthopaedy n. + -ique -ic suffix. Compare Italian ortopedico (1840).In some cases the element -paed- , -ped- appears to have been interpreted as deriving from classical Latin ped- , pēs foot (see -ped comb. form). Compare the following:1871 L. Colange Zell's Pop. Encycl. II. 531/2 Orthopedic..Pertaining or relating to the cure of diseases of the feet.
