Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Orchidaceae.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Orchidaceae, family name, substituted by J. Lindley ( Nat. Syst. Bot. (ed. 2, 1836) 336) for the earlier Orchideae (see orchideous adj.); compare -aceous suffix.
1. Botany. Of, relating to, or characteristic of the family Orchidaceae, comprising the orchids.In quot. 1927: used for the cultivation of orchids.
