Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek ὄστρακον.
Etymology: < ancient Greek ὄστρακον earthen vessel, potsherd, hard shell < the same Indo-European base as the word for bone (see osteo- comb. form), with an -r- suffix (shown also by ancient Greek ὄστρειον oyster n.).
Archaeology.
A potsherd (or occasionally: a piece of limestone) used in the ancient world as a writing surface, esp. for votive or hieratic purposes or (in Greek cities) for voting in an ostracism. Frequently in plural.
