单词 | othyl |
释义 | othyln. Chemistry. Now historical and rare. A. W. Williamson's name for: the radical —COCH3, usually called acetyl. ΚΠ 1852 A. W. Williamson in Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 4 238 The hydrogen of the radical which is thus replaced by oxygen, and acetic acid differs from alcohol by containing, instead of ethyle, this other radical, differing from it by having oxygen in lieu of an equivalent of hydrogen, and which may be called oxygen-ethyle, or othyle. 1854 Proc. Royal Soc. 7 39 Pentachloride of phosphorus gives a violent reaction with thiacetic acid, yielding sulphochloride of phosphorus, chloride of othyl, and hydrochloric acid. 1863 H. Watts Dict. Chem. I. 33 To apply the same name to two different radicles would of course create confusion; hence the terms acetoxyl proposed by Kolbe and othyl (abbreviation of oxygen-ethyl) by Williamson, for the radicle C2H3O. Most chemists, however, are of opinion, that the radicle supposed to exist in acetic acid and its derivatives, is most appropriately designated by the term acetyl. 1962 M. P. Crosland Hist. Stud. Lang. Chem. v. i. 296 The same name [sc. acetyl] was used by Gerhardt to denote the group C2H3O, a meaning which it has kept despite the attempts of Williamson and Kekulé to describe this latter group as othyl.
