Etymology: Probably < French organsin, although this is first attested later (1619) < Italian organzino (1567) < Organzi , the European name of Urganj (now Persian Urġanj , Uzbek Urganč , Russian Urgenč ), a town in Uzbekistan, known in the late Middle Ages (when it was the capital and major trading centre of the khanate of Khorezm) for its silk trade (compare -i suffix²) + Italian -ino -ine suffix⁴. Compare also Old French orcassin (c1150), Old French, Middle French orgasin, (second half of the 13th cent), apparently representing an earlier borrowing.

In full organzine silk. A strong silk yarn, made of single threads twisted together, folded in two, and twisted again in the opposite direction. Also: a fabric made from this thread.
