Etymology: < Telugu rēgaḍa < rē black soil + -gaḍa clod, clump.The final vowel is often not pronounced in Telugu. The English spellings are an attempt to represent the Telugu pronunciation, with u or a used to represent /ʌ/ and r to represent the voiced retroflex plosive ḍ (see the discussion of a similar transliteration at mangelin n.).

A rich, dark, loamy soil, formed mainly by the weathering of basaltic rock and occurring extensively on the Deccan and Malwa Plateaus of India. Cf. black cotton ground n. at black adj. and n. Compounds 1e(a).
