Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin orīchalcum.
Etymology: < classical Latin orīchalcum < ancient Greek ὀρείχαλκος , literally ‘mountain-copper’, applied to a yellow copper ore or brass < ὄρει , dative singular of ὄρος mountain (see oro- comb. form1) + χαλκός copper (see chalco- comb. form). In post-classical Latin (from 4th cent.) re-formed as aurichalcum , after classical Latin aurum gold, as if ‘golden copper’. A yellow metal prized by the ancient Greeks and Romans, perhaps a naturally occurring alloy of copper and gold.Applied by Strabo to brass, though some Greek writers treated ὀρείχαλκος as a fabulous metal. In the Middle Ages the metal is often referred to as a very precious substance known only by repute.
