Etymology: < French osphrésiologie (1821) < ancient Greek ὄσϕρησις smelling, smell ( < stem of ὀσϕραίνεσθαι to smell (see osphradium n.) + -σις -sis suffix) + French -ologie -ology comb. form.
rare. Now historical.
Originally; †a treatise on the sense of smell and odours (obsolete). Later: the scientific study of the sense of smell.
