Origin: From a proper name. Etymons: proper name Orkhon, Orhon.
Etymology: < Orkhon (Mongolian Orhon, Russian Orxon), the name of a river in northern Mongolia near which the monuments were discovered in 1889 by the Russian explorer N. M. Jadrincev.
attributive. Of, relating to, or designating a number of 8th-cent. stone monuments found in northern Mongolia; esp. in Orkhon inscriptions. Also: of, relating to, or denoting the Turkic language in which these inscriptions are written.The inscriptions on the monuments are believed to be the earliest extant Turkic writings.
