Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ornamental adj., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < ornamental adj. + -ism suffix. In quots. 1926, 1962 probably after Russian ukrašatel′stvo ( < ukrašatel′ decorator, ornamenter (see ornamentalist n.) + -stvo , suffix forming abstract nouns), or a phrase such as sklonnost′ k ukrašeniju tendency to ornamentation. Compare earlier ornamentalist n.
The principle or practice of being ornamental, esp. in art and literature.
