Etymology: Cognate with Old Dutch ovit (Middle Dutch ōvet , ooft , Dutch ooft ), Middle Low German ōvet , ōvest , Old High German obaz , obiz , ovetz (Middle High German obez , early modern German obs , German regional (Bavaria) Owes , Obs , (Swiss) Obs , German Obst , with excrescent -t (16th cent.)), all in sense ‘fruit’, perhaps (with original sense ‘additional food, side dish’) < the Germanic base of Old High German oba above (see over adj.) + the Germanic base of ees n.The origin of the -s- in the modern regional form ovest is uncertain; it perhaps shows the influence of harvest n.
Now rare (English regional (Hampshire) in later use).
Originally: †fruit (obsolete). In later use spec.: acorns and oak mast. Also figurative.
