Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin ōvum , -ism suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin ōvum ovum n. (compare ovi- comb. form1) + -ism suffix, probably after French ovisme (1838 or earlier). Compare Italian ovismo (1875). Compare earlier ovist n.
Biology (historical).
The theory that the ovum holds all the material necessary for development of the embryo, the sperm providing only a stimulus to initiate the process.See note s.v. ovist n.
