Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin ozaena, ozēna.
Etymology: < classical Latin ozaena (also ozēna) a fetid polypus in the nose, a strong-smelling marine polyp (Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek ὄζαινα < ancient Greek ὄζειν to smell (see ozone n.) + -αινα, suffix forming nouns. Compare Middle French, French ozène (c1478).
1. Medicine. Originally: an ulcer of the nose (or, rarely, other part of the body), esp. when accompanied by a fetid discharge; any of various conditions characterized by the presence of such a lesion. Later: spec. a chronic disease of the nose characterized by atrophy of the nasal mucosa and bone, with a thick secretion that forms dry, extremely fetid crusts, often associated with the presence of bacteria of the genus Klebsiella.
