Etymology: < rosy adj. + fingered adj.1With allusion to the dawn, after ancient Greek ῥοδοδάκτυλος rosy-fingered, in ῥοδοδάκτυλος ἠώς rosy-fingered dawn (Homer Odyssey 2. 1, etc.). The expression occurs five times in the Iliad and twenty-two times in the Odyssey, always at the end of a hexameter line.
Chiefly poetic.
Having rosy-coloured fingers. Also figurative. Frequently as a conventional epithet for dawn.
