Primary stress is attracted to the first syllable of this combining form and vowels may be reduced accordingly; see e.g. nullifidian n. and adj.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin fidēs , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin fidēs faith n. and int. + -ian suffix.A small number of formations are found from the 16th cent., apparently earliest in nullifidian n.
1. Forming nouns with the sense ‘a person having faith or belief’, with the object or manner of belief specified by the first element, as male-fidian n., petty-fidian n., etc.
2. Forming adjectives with the sense ‘having faith or belief’, with the object or manner of belief specified by the first element, as minimifidian adj.
